The
inner drive to succeed and express herself through music and art has brought
Nimo Jeddy thus far to not only recording music but affording other artists a
platform to record. We had an opportunity to get more insight about her and her
music.
1. Hey, how would you
like to introduce yourself?
1a) Jedidah Wairimu Kiereri (born 12th
August 1994) or popularly by my stage name Nimo Jeddy, a Kenyan based Pop, Afro pop and R&B singer,
song writer and entrepreneur. I released three songs late last year titled
‘Samurai Jack’, ‘Katika’ and ‘Nipishe. I also own a rehearsal studio by the name Kara Studios
which she uses for band practice and also for business.
I am also a Business(-Marketing)
graduate from USIU-AFRICA. I am the youngest in my family and have three elder
siblings. I started writing songs from when I was very young and my first full
and complete song I composed when I was 12 years old. I was born in Nairobi but
brought up in a small town (then it was small not now though) called Thika.
Brought up in a farm house setting, I rarely met up with other children outside
school. I grew up with my niece and when we were together we would sing along
to our favourite songs and imitate the dance moves and that really made me fall
deeply in love with music. We would get to watch the music videos and songs
when my elder siblings would jam to them and that really exposed me to a lot of
music. My eldest sister, Norah, would give us(me and my niece, Ashley) vocal
classes and time to time my brother would also teach us easy songs then record
us. I have always loved music and having people who would help me explore it
and show me different aspects of it when I was younger, was a major blessing to
me.
2) I’ve been doing music professionally
from the year 2016. I hadn’t recorded or released any project then but mostly
focused on performing covers and some of my songs to push my name out there
first. Last year is when I started working on my projects. I promise a lot of
content this year to hopefully fill all your playlists.
3. What has been your
biggest highlight so far?
3) My biggest highlight so far is being
the closing act and opening act for the Zanzibar band called Siti and the band
at village market. I appreciate the platform they gave me to showcase my craft
in front of their fans and audience. It was in the middle of the mall and it
was amazing to draw people from shops and whatever they were doing by
performing.
4. Who are some of
your influences in music that have inspired you?
4) My major influences include Ray C (Tz), Amani
(Kenya), Beyoncé and Aaliyah.
5. What's your chosen
genre of music and why were you attracted to that particular genre?
5) Pop and that’s because it has freedom
in that you can go into other genres and have very different distinct
sounds.R&B has always been my vibe and actually first love in music. Most
of my influencers and favourite artists are from this genre. I love how the
song arrangement is handled in this genre and the mood it embodies. The
emotions are relatable in all affairs especially love affairs and it finds a
way to evoke that feeling and emotion.
6. What lessons have
you learnt so far in the industry?
6) I have learnt so much in the music
industry but the one thing that many people don’t know is, it looks like all
fun and games but it is a very demanding industry and talent just doesn’t cut
it, on its own. The work ethic backing the talent is what will give you an IT
factor. Also I have learnt that the music industry is not cheap in any way. You
need to invest A LOT in it to push your brand and music.
7. Who are some of the
artists and producers you have worked with so far?
7) I’ve worked with producers like
Wesley from Real me Records, Wilson from Mlango studio, and Sam Mayaka.
Musicians I have worked with include Luke Okecc (@okecc_Luke) and Shee (@thee_shee).
8. Tell us a little
about your very first song?
8) My first ever song I composed when I
was 12 years old. It was titled peace, love, and unity. It was inspired by the Disney
original, Cheetah Girls (90’s babies know what I’m talking about Hehehe…). My first released professional song titled,
‘Samurai Jack’ is a pop song with a hip hop feel to it. It talks about how you
aren’t necessarily lonely just because you are alone and taking Samurai Jack as
an example of those who are content with themselves even in their own company,
the song narrates the tale of those who keep to themselves, ‘minding their own’
‘living their own’.
9. How the reception
of your music by audiences been so far?
9) The reception was good actually
because I didn’t expect the responses I got especially from my industry peers
and mentors. I remember having some
anxiety and fears before releasing the songs to fans and critics. I value the
positive response I’ve got from my supporters. I appreciate how they rally me
to continue dropping songs and their anticipation for my live performances which
I’ll really be doing this year.
10. What plans do you
have in the short term and what can fans expect in 2020?
10) Albums! Albums! Albums! And singles
too. I’ll also be performing a lot as I said earlier, so many shows and live
gigs. In June, I’ll have a joint event with @Okecc_Luke and also at the end of
the year I’ll have another major event. Details will be confirmed at a later
date, so stay tuned and watch this space.
11. How can one access
your music?
11) People can easily access my music on
Spotify, You tube, Sound cloud, Apple music, Google play iHeartRadio, Napster,
MediaNet, Deezer. We have worked extremely hard to make the music available on
whatever platform works best near everyone and we are still working on making
the songs even more readily available.
